did i ever mention how annoying it is when frodo fans reply “WHY DON’T YOU BEAR THE RING OF POWER FOR A WHILE” to anyone who dares ever criticize him or his life choices. it just seems like the popular defence that everyone responds ”OOO YEA Y DONT U BEAR THE RING OF POWER LOL GOOD ONE” like you’re actually saying something intelligent. you’re not, you’re just regurgitating what every other annoyed frodo fangirl on the internet has said at one point in their life.

The worst thing about that kind of argument/insult is that makes Frodo out to be some kind of angelic savior who’s able to bear the Ring because he’s significantly stronger than most people, but I don’t see that as the point at all. Frodo is a hero because of his decision to take the Ring to Mordor. There’s no way of knowing if he was the only person in Middle Earth who could have carried it as far, so that isn’t the criteria we should use to judge how heroic he is. The uncertainty is part of the point; there’s no way of knowing how long any specific person could resist the Ring, but that question is supposed to be ever-present in the work. Tolkien’s point is that the meek and the humble—like Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam—are most capable of resisting the Ring’s temptation, but to take that and throw it at someone for expressing an opinion (no matter how rotten the Frodo-bashing is) seems more like stooping to their level than actually defending the character for what does make him remarkable. :/
